Background:

Mr. Shafiqul Islam, one of the oldest candle producers for Aarong, began his journey amidst the economic struggles of post-liberation Bangladesh. In 1974, the scarcity of baby food deeply affected him, motivating him to forgo profit from selling baby food when he started his own business in 1981. However, after facing setbacks, he shifted from retail sales to candle production in 1988, beginning on a small scale. His innovative designs and dedication eventually led him to join Aarong as a producer in 1993.

Journey to Work:

The devastating flood of 1988, coupled with the nation’s load-shedding crisis, increased the demand for candles. Inspired by one of his close brothers, Shafiqul ventured into candle production, adding unique designs to stand out in the market. His creativity not only brought him national recognition but also export orders. Introduced to Aarong by a fellow producer, he showcased 7-8 innovative designs that marked the beginning of his long-standing partnership with the organization.

Challenges and Support:

Shafiqul’s initial trading business suffered due to the 1988 flood, forcing him to start anew. However, his determination to innovate and grow his candle production business brought him success. Aarong provided him a platform to expand his reach while helping him overcome challenges through branding and market access.

Leadership and Impact: 

In 2015, Shafiqul Islam demonstrated his commitment to artisans by introducing an incentive program for those with over 10 years of service. He also invests in their well-being by funding their education, providing bonuses for weddings, and supporting their families. His belief in reinvesting profits to expand his business and create employment opportunities has inspired many.

Today, Shafiqul Islam takes pride in his contributions to Aarong and the artisan community, acknowledging Aarong’s role in transforming his and his artisans’ lives. He continues to serve as a role model, blending business growth with social responsibility.
