Background:

Nurunnabi hails from a remote village in Borni, located in the Tangail District. Born into an artisan family, he learned the art of bamboo crafting from his father. Despite having studied up to Class VIII, Nurunnabi struggled with persistent poverty and lived in a vulnerable condition for many years. His journey as an artisan took a turn when DEW Crafts field workers discovered his talent during a field trip in 2001.

Journey to Work:

With DEW Crafts’ mentorship, Nurunnabi refined his bamboo crafting skills and gained valuable insights into market trends and demands. As a result, he was able to form a group of artisans with similar skills and started supplying their products to fair trade markets, under DEW Crafts’ guidance.

Life Transformation:

Once homeless and living in a dilapidated ancestral house, Nurunnabi is now a proud homeowner. His new house is equipped with safe water and sanitation facilities, allowing him to live with dignity. He has also embraced modern tools such as a laptop, camera, and motorbike to manage orders, design samples, and communicate with DEW Crafts. As a supervisor and mentor, he trains group members and oversees their work.

Skill Development & Community Impact:

Nurunnabi continues to grow through various capacity-building training programs organized by DEW Crafts, its buyers, and partners, as well as government organizations. His children are now attending school, and he has become a respected figure in his community. Other local artisans look up to him for guidance and seek similar support from DEW Crafts, including training on climate change adaptation.
